Principal's Message

Welcome to University High School!
A Magnet School Of Distinction
Thomas Ott

Hello Cougars and Cougar Families!

I am thrilled to let you know that we received notification today that our wonderful IB program has been named a 2024 National School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America!

To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme.  This year, we received 95 points out of a possible 100 on the scoring rubric with tremendous feedback.  Some of those feedback items that stood out are:

  • The magnet theme is integrated throughout core classes, electives, and co- curriculars.
  • Narrative supports that school promotes access to all demographic groups (including zoned student participation in IB classes)
  • The school has innovative instructional practices throughout the program
  • The school offers extensive professional development specific to the theme, all licensed staff have received training AND it is embedded into professional learning communities
  • Diversity is infused into the school's culture and curriculum.
  • The school has activities that promote collaboration and the exchange of ideas between different groups.
  • Students interact in a variety of ways with a focus on academics/academic learning and clubs.

This recognition is a testament to the hard work and collaboration of our Staffulty and students participating in the IB program.  I am so proud of each of them for achieving this honor.  We will now be recognized and receive a National Merit School of Distinction Award during an award ceremony held a Magnet Schools of America's National Conference in New York City in April!
